‘Am I winning? Or is it a show?’
This week has been a ‘tough’ one.
I say that in quotes, because tough is relative. A tough week back in the day used to be 12 Hours+ of unload containers, coming home exhausted to work on the business, but instead of working on it, I find I’m putting out fires, making my exhaustion even worse.
It’s also hard to back up a near perfect week that we had last week. We enrolled new clients every single day. ALL Pay in Fulls, resulting in an incredible cash week.
This week, although we enrolled a good amount of people into skipthemba.com and kpitracker.ai we didn’t sign any new consulting clients, which is a first for 2025.
My focus for this week was implementing team features for our kpitracker.ai app. While also speeding up our skipthemba.com platform. I completely crashed both apps, and had a customer complain for the first time. A fair complaint, it’s not their problem that I crashed my app, they paid, they should get what they paid for.
It gave me a bit of doubt, a bit of “wtf are you even doing?” . But that quickly passed as I was able to fix everything and even make a few improvements.
Now, let me give you some context behind these apps.
The Numbers
I want to be transparent about our numbers which will give you a TRUE perspective on what is happening. Mostly because I think that people will see some of the success we’re having and think that it’s easy to just dive in and make stuff.
February was a good month for our consulting business, bringing in another $50k of sales. It’s cool to see that side of the business grow. I mean it proves that we know this stuff, even with half of my usual hours, I’m able to produce just as much if not MORE clients then ever. So that’s a good thing.
Expenses
Now for the actual apps, I’ll set the tonne with our expenses first. Both apps share the costs so we will bundle the expenses together:
DB App Builder: $499
Community Host: $399
Intercom: $49
Feather: $49
So total expenses $996
Obviously we have other apps like Kit, Notion, Stripe fees etc. but they are used for our consulting to, so not bundling them in here.
Income
Let’s look at the income, SkiptheMBA is currently $49/mo and KPITracker is $16/mo, which is an increase from last month.
SkipTheMBA: 32 users = $1,568
KPITracker: 24 users = approx $350 (price change)
So total income is $1,918
Leaving us with about $1,000 in ‘take-home’
Pretty good considering we only started 30-45 days ago and we have been keeping both apps reasonably exclusive.
So why does it feel like losing?
This is the battle with entrepreneurship, there’s always something better and bigger. In this case it’s not something new, it’s something old.
If I dedicated the same amount of time that I dedicated to my apps, instead to my consulting business, I would have probably secured 2+ more sales which is a hell of a lot more than a measly $1,000.
And with the consulting side, I know the game, I know what I need to do to scale and it’s all relatively ‘easy’ for me.
BUT, I know what the long-term plan is and I know that this ‘starter’ work will eventually subside.
So right now, I’m content with ‘losing’ while we build for the long-term.
What’s next?
This next week I’ll be focusing heavily on ‘launching’ and sales… kinda my favorite thing to focus on.
Part of the reason why the ‘losing’ feeling keeps coming up is because I will work for 6 hours on a small change to the app, and yes it’ll look better, perform better etc. but the Stripe balance still looks the same.
Whereas when I focus on sales and marketing for 6 hours, the Stripe balance looks a lot different. But again, that’s part of the game and also a bad habit that I’ve built. Progress isn’t linear and that Stripe balance may hold steady while we build… and I’ve got to be ok with that.
